12/29/10 3 Weeks Old!

Sorry for the lapse in updates. We have had some ups and downs and had several days with visitors after Christmas. I will do my best to fill everyone in on what has happened since last time.

Ryan: He has continued his feedings and is now off of his IV fluids and nutrition and his PICC line has been removed. He is getting the 24 calorie breast milk (fortified) to help him gain weight. He has had some trouble with maintaining his oxygen levels so he is back and forth with his nasal cannula oxygen. No big deal this is expected and he is not on much oxygen at all when he uses it. He now weighs 2lb 10oz. Still one ounce behind his sister!

A little smile from Ryan

Tyler: He is hanging in there! He started having lots of left over milk in his tummy so they changed his feedings from continuous to every 3 hour bolus feedings. When he had continuous feedings they fed him through a tube that goes just past the stomach into the first part of the intestine. No that he gets bolus feedings they give him his total amount at one time directly into his stomach. Since they have started those he has not had hardly and left overs at all. He is processing it well. He continues to have trouble at his touch times and likes to throw a fit and holds his breath sometimes. I can't say that I blame him since he has had so much bad stuff done to him since he was born. He does like his mommy though! He is doing better when I try to touch him and he does great when I hold him. He is getting better about his fits and has been able to be on nasal cannula off and on. He gets CPAP for 6 hours and nasal cannula for 3 hours. They will increase his time on nasal cannula as he tolerates it. He has also broken the 2lb mark. He barley made it but was 2lbs even last night when they weighed him. Way to go little man!

Emily: Unfortunately she had to stop her feedings on the 26th. This was very difficult for her because she had gotten into the routine of eating every 3 hours. Made for a cranky girl! Not to mention she had to have her PICC line put back in so she could get her nutrition through her vein. She did get to restart her feedings today and she seemed very happy. Despite her time off her feedings she is still heavier than Ryan. She weighed in at 2lb 11oz last night. She remains off her oxygen and will hopefully be back off of her IV fluids in a few days. She did have a rough day on the 26th. because of her changes they decided to put her in an open bed with a radiant warmer in order to keep a closer eye on her. This bed is actually a step backwards even though having them in the open seems so positive! She got a new neighbor across the row who was not doing very well at all and had many people helping them. This caused quite a commotion for several hours and it was hard for her to cope with all the noise since this was the first day out of the incubator. Things finally calmed down and we got her settled when the helicopter team came to transfer the baby to another hospital. Then we had noise all over again. It was nearly impossible for us to calm her and finally I asked the nurse if I could hold her even though it was not her touch time. She said absolutely if it will decrease her stress we will try it. I was hoping that the sound of my heart beat would drown out some of the noise. We put her on my chested I rocked her and covered her other ear with a blanket. This was not perfect but did calm her until they left. Since then she has gone back into her incubator and is doing well.
Desperate times call for desperate measures! I will feed myself!
